Cockermouth will have to overcome reigning champions Furness on Saturday to stay in the Cumbria League Premier Division title race.
They currently trail Carlisle by five points and travel to south Cumbria to take on the 2021 winners who are only fourth this time round.
The weather, however, could dampen everything as current forecasts for Saturday the length and breadth of Cumbria are for rain most of the day.
There’s an indication of expected conditions in the fact local pigeon fanciers have switched their race from Saturday to Friday to avoid the bad weather.
Cockermouth weren’t at their best last week but they got home by 16 runs against Cleator to stay in second place.
The same could be said of Carlisle who were taken even closer by Workington with the leaders just getting home by 10 runs.
Carlisle are back at Edenside on Saturday against Millom and will expect to complete a double over the south Cumbrians.
Third-placed Keswick suffered a surprise reversal at Wigton last weekend which could have virtually ended their title hopes, although they do have to host Carlisle in the final game of the season.
Tomorrow they entertain Whitehaven who moved off the bottom of the table last week with a win over Dalton in a low scoring game at the Playground.
The big relegation battle is at Dalton, now bottom, against Haverigg whose form has been a real concern over recent weeks.
Egremont will be watching that result in particular after edging towards safety in recent weeks and they visit Workington.
The other game sees Wigton trying to follow up that excellent win against Keswick with another home game with Cleator.
Who comes up from the First Division could be decided in the penultimate fixture this weekend.
Lindal Moor, relegated last season, lead the way by only two points from Ulverston and they entertain their nearest rivals on Saturday. Victory for Lindal would see them back in the Premier Division while a win for Ulverston would make them favourites going into the final games on September 10.
It’s all academic of course if the rain interferes as forecast.
