Charles III has been formally proclaimed king at a historic ceremony at St James’s Palace.

Flags lowered in mourning for the late Queen will fly full-mast after the Accession Council, which was televised for the first time.

Further proclamations will take place across the UK until Sunday, when flags will return to half-mast.

It comes after the King pledged to follow his mother’s life of service in an emotional first speech to the nation, which also featured a picture of the Queen, believed to have been taken in Whitehaven.

The Proclamation will be made at St James’s Palace today, September 10, at 11am, then at the Royal Exchange in the City of London at noon.

Tomorrow, the Proclamation will be made in Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast, then at county, city, borough and parish level.

Flags currently flown at half-mast will return to full mast from 11am today until 1pm tomorrow while the Proclamation of the new King is made. They will then be lowered to half-mast until 8am on the day following the state funeral.
