Former Workington Reds forward Conor Gaul helped Wellington Olympic clinch the Central League title in New Zealand earlier today.
Gaul, who left Reds just before the end of last season to join the Greek-owned Wellington club, came off the bench to score the only goal of the game.
It gave Olympic a 1-0 win over their nearest rivals Miramar Rangers who had gone into the game two points behind, needing a win to pinch the title.
Gaul, whose family hail from Barrow, came on 20 minutes from the end and with ten left to play grabbed the winning goal.
It was his sixth goal in ten games but he’s had a couple of injury issues and didn’t start today because of a rule in New Zealand which insists the club has to play two Under-20’s. One of the regulars was away with New Zealand in Australia and the other one capable of stepping up played in Gaul’s position.
It means that Wellington and Miramar will both go forward as Central League representatives in the National play-offs in October.
Gaul told the Crack: “Really looking forward to the National League play-offs and scoring the winning goal in the last game against our nearest rivals in the table was a bit special.
“It’s been a good experience for me as I’ve had games at left wing back as well as a striker. I have had a few yellow cards mind and have had to be careful because I didn’t want a ban for the big games.”
