Workington had to settle for a point after a cracking game between two of the leading sides in the NPL Wes Division ended all square.
But home manager Danny Grainger was disappointed and frustrated that his side had to settle for a point from an 85th minute equaliser.
“I thought we were the side that deserved to win it after dominating most of the game. We did everything but score on a number of occasions,” he said.
Workington hit the woodwork twice, were denied twice by top saves from Sam Booth, and had a clear penalty shout turned aside by referee Alex Beckett.
Grainger said afterwards the official had apologised by saying he was unsighted over the incident when Dan Wordsworth was taken down in the box.
If the first half had been even, a technical game between two teams who wanted to get the ball down and play, the second half was dominated by the home side after they upped the tempo.
Yet it was Leek who took the lead with a good goal on 72 minutes. Building on hesitancy in the Reds defence down the right Semi Scott Wara whipped in a good deep cross and Rob Stevenson scored with an acrobatic volley past Jim Atkinson.
On the balance of play, however, Workington deserved something out of the game and it came five minutes from the end.
Dav Symington, who had been denied by Booth and the upright, cut across the Leek defence from the left and fired a low right foot shot into the net.
Earlier he had seen one shot come back off the foot of the post and another spectacularly turned over by Booth. But the Leek keeper had served his best effort to deny home skipper Conor Tinnion, a curling right foot shot heading for the top corner which he turned onto the bar and safety.
Home keeper Jim Atkinson made a good block early in the game to deny Williams Reeves while Ruben Jerome headed against the Leek bar.
The frustration for Grainger was that table-toppers Macclesfield were beaten at home by Bootle and making a one-point cut into their lead could have been three.
