Two Cumbrian hotels have been named among the 12 best in the country by the Good Hotel Guide.
Forest Side in Grasmere and the Westmorland Hotel in Tebay have been name among the César winners for 2023.
The Césars – named after famous Swiss hotelier César Ritz – are given to the hotels, inns and B&Bs considered outstanding in their particular category, resulting in a “must go” list of places to stay for those planning weekend breaks and holidays.
Forest Side was named as Best Country Hotel. The Good Hotel Guide said: “Michelin-starred cuisine (with 90 per cent of the produce sourced from a 10-mile radius), elegant bedrooms and red squirrels in the garden are the successful recipe for this 20-room hotel.”

The Westmorland Hotel in Tebay, formerly Tebay Services Hotel, was named the best hotel in the North. The Good Hotel Guide said: “This Lake District hotel on the M6 offers quiet rooms with fell views, unfussy but tasty Cumbrian food, excellent value for money and what readers describe as a feeling of ‘peace and well-being’.”
Hotel manager Bev Fothergill said “Our hotel is all about celebrating the landscape and produce of Cumbria. We’re more than just a ‘motorway services’ hotel, our aim is to give our guests a comfortable stay with a true taste of the local area. Top quality local produce and our incredible team are a crucial part of our success. We’re absolutely thrilled to be named best hotel in the North of England.”
The Good Hotel Guide, now in its 46th edition, is the only independent hotel guide in the UK as it does not accept payment for inclusion or free hospitality in return for coverage.
