Cumbria coach Paul Crarey is looking for the county’s rugby league fraternity to back the big clash with Jamaica.
The reformed Cumbria county side will see them take on a Jamaica squad preparing to take part in the RL World Cup.
Crarey says: “We shout about not having a Super League team in the county and that we want one. Well, we have to show there’s an audience for one up here with a good attendance for this game.
“We have to keep on taking small steps to reach a big target and hopefull this county game is the start of such a process.”
St Helens star Kyle Amor will captain the Cumbria side against the Jamaicans, who arrived in Workington today.
He is one of three big names who will be in the team alongside leading players from Barrow, Whitehaven and Workington.
“There would have been more but some have training commitments with the Home Countries for the World Cup so we have Kyle, Brad Singleton and Gregg McNally in our squad.
“We have only had one training session at Workington on Tuesday and will be at Whitehaven tonight. The enthusiasm has been terrific as I knew it would be because there’s something special about representing Cumbria.
“The other big thing is we don’t have to introduce anybody, they all know each other.
“Because of the limited preparation we are keeping our structure simple but we will be looking to play some open rugby.
“I am sure it’s going to be an entertaining game although the weather might dictate things with rain forecast.”
Jamaica, who include two Workington players in Alex Young and Joe Brown, are in the same World Cup group as Ireland, New Zealand and Lebanon.
The kick-off at Derwent Park, Workington, is 7.45pm tomorrow, Friday October 7.
