Flood alerts in force for Cumbria

Several flood alerts are in force for Cumbria.

Heavy rain overnight has meant several areas have experienced localised flooding and drivers are urged to take care on the roads.

Flooding is expected at Keswick Campsite.

Derwentwater was expected to peak at 5am this morning, affecting low lying areas. People are advised to avoid low lying footpaths and bridges near watercourses.

Seven flood alerts are in place.

Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwentwater

Derwentwater remains high affecting low lying areas bordering the shores of Derwentwater. Areas most at risk are the Upper Derwent from Seathwaite to Derwentwater. 

Rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster

Areas most at risk include low-lying land and roads adjacent to the Rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster and other watercourses, from Grasmere to Grange-over-Sands including low lying areas around Ambleside, Skelwith Bridge, Windermere, Hawkshead, Newby Bridge, Backbarrow, Cark and Cartmel. 

Rivers Caldew and Petteril

Areas most at risk include low-lying land and roads adjacent to the Rivers Caldew and Petteril from the Lakeland fells to Carlisle including Greystoke, Newton Reigny, Plumpton, Stockdalewath, Sebergham and Denton Holme in Carlisle.

Rivers Cocker, Marron and Derwent

Areas most at risk include low-lying land and roads adjacent to the Lower Derwent from Bassenthwaite Lake to the coast at Workington. The Cocker from Crummock Water to Cockermouth. The River Marron from Ullock to its confluence with the Derwent near Bridgefoot. 

Rivers Duddon, Crake and Mill Beck

Areas most at risk include low-lying land and roads adjacent to the Rivers Duddon, Crake and Mill Beck and other watercourses, from Coniston to Barrow-in-Furness including low lying areas around Ulpha, Duddon Bridge, Broughton in Furness, Kirkby-in-Furness, Dalton in Furness and Ulverston.

Rivers Ehen, Calder, Irt and Esk

Areas most at risk include low-lying land and roads adjacent to the Rivers Ehen, Calder, Irt and Esk and other watercourses, from Harrington to Annaside including low lying areas around Whitehaven, Cleator Moor, Egremont, Gosforth, Eskdale and Bootle. 

Coast at North Morecambe Bay

Flooding is possible at the coast at North Morecambe Bay from Roosebeck to Carnforth including low lying areas around Ulverston, Greenodd, Haverthwaite, Flookburgh, Grange-over-Sands, Levens, Milnthorpe, Sandside, Arnside and Silverdale.

Today’s lunchtime high tide will not meet any Flood Alert thresholds however, the tide at 12:30am tomorrow, October 11, will exceed the threshold and a flood alert will be issued ahead of this tide. Incident response staff are closing flood gates and checking defences. People are urged to be careful along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous.
