Whitehaven’s club captain Karl Dixon has agreed a new deal to stay with the Championship club for another season.
Named captain ahead of the 2022 campaign Dixon made 20 appearances scoring five tries with the end of his campaign coming earlier than expected following medical advice on a second concussion of the season.
Head coach Jonty Gorley said: “To get Karl over the line for another season with Whitehaven is a massive coup . He missed a lot of last year through injury etc so he’s still got a lot to give to this team.
“We are a better team when Karl plays, in whatever position he plays. He’s got a winning mentality and you can sense the other lads love playing in the same team as Karl. He has a big part to play in how we go next year.”
Whitehaven rated Dixon one of the most exciting amateur players in the country when they signed him from Wath Brow in November 2019.
Now 29-years-old, at the time Dixon had just returned from the England Lions tour of New Zealand and joined the Haven squad for their first training session ahead of the 2020 season which ended being shortened.
Dixon, a long-term target for Whitehaven, had initially signed a 12-month contract and agreed a two year deal ahead of the 2021 season.
He helped the Brow top the NCL Premier Division table in 2019 with 19 tries in 20 appearances, earning man of the match on four occasions.
His try tally in the division was only topped by one other player – his Hornets team-mate Curtis Teare who is now playing alongside him at the LEL Arena.
