A not-so-adventure-smart sheep stuck on the ledge of a gill needed help from mountain rescue volunteers.
Keswick Mountain Rescue team were called out by a farmer from St John’s-in-the-Vale after one of his sheep fell into a ghyll.
It had fallen while the farmer was gathering his sheep and landed on a ledge part way down a steep and narrow part of Beckthorns Gill.

The team fought their way up through chest-high bracken and a rope system was set up to lower a team member down to rescue the sheep.
When the rescuer arrived at the ledge, the sheep decided that a self-rescue was preferred and launched itself into the pool below the gill.
The operation involved seven team members and lasted two hours.
A team spokesman said: “Mountain rescue have a long history with sheep rescues with well over 200 sheep rescued by Keswick team alone. The sheep seemed to suffer no ill effects from its hasty escape.”
