Cumberland FA is to investigate why a Workington Sunday League game was abandoned at the week-end.
Dearham and Deer Orchard were playing a League game – the only fixture of the day – when the referee decided to call it off midway through the second half.
It is believed that it was caused by verbal abuse of the official from spectators, and was not a case of physical abuse which has received so much national publicity recently.
A player had been sin-binned and another sent-off before the game was abandoned.
The referee decided to abandon the game in the 65th minute with the score at 1-1 and Dearham down to ten men.
The Cumberland FA is awaiting the referee’s report and will investigate from there.
Last season the Football Association issued 380 bans for attacks on grass roots officials in youth and adult football across the country.
