Former Whitehaven professional Safyaan Sharif played a part in Scotland’s historic T20 World Cup victory over the West Indies.

Sharif took 1-23 from 3.3 overs but ended the innings by removing the experienced Jason Holder after he top-scored with 38.

The 31-year-old Huddersfield-born Sharif has been a fixture in the Scotland side for ten years and has also played limited overs cricket for both Kent and Derbyshire.

He was a match-day pro for Whitehaven in 2019, travelling from Scotland for games, and was a popular member of the club that year.

Scotland are ranked 15th in the world ahead of the current Men’s T20 World Cup but their win over two-time winners West Indies has rocked the cricket world.

Scotland had made 160-5, with opener George Munsey hitting 66 not out from 53 balls.

Chasing 161 to win, a mixture of woeful batting and disciplined bowling saw the Windies bowled out for 118, with Sharif having Holder caught in the deep to spark jubilant celebrations by the Scotland players.

Big hitting Munsey is also familiar to the Carlisle club as he has played as a sub pro in a Cumbria League game against Cockermouth.

He was booked for a second appearance but the game was washed out.
