Wigton were taken to the limits by an enthusiastic Silloth side but earned the Counties 1 Cumbria points in the end.
It finished 27-20 to Wigton after Silloth had shown tremendous spirit, particularly during the first quarter of the game when they were on top.
Without four key players Silloth started really well and went ahead on ten minutes.
Debutant Jordan Ostle cut in from 40 yards out and had the pace to make the line for an unconverted try.
Silloth continued to have the better of things and Matty Bell, playing his first game for four years, scored a well-taken try in the corner.
Wigton, however, finished the half strongly and turned round 12-10 to the good.
Calvin Crompton and Alistair Gaitskill went in for tries, one of which was converted by Stuart Carruthers – the only successful kick of the game.
Wigton continued from where they left-off at the start of the second half and they increased their lead with a try from Richard Moffatt.
Silloth then responded strongly and it looked as if they had swung the game in their favour.
Ostle went in for his second try and then Josh Pattinson got over to establish a 20-17 lead.
Once again Wigton battled back and they squeezed into the lead with a try from James Paisley.
It stayed at 20-22 until the closing minutes when Stephen Harris scored the clinching try for Wigton.
Both sides put plenty into a hard-fought derby clash and has set them-up for interesting contests this week-end as Wigton host St Benedict’s and Silloth travel to Workington.
