
There was another weekend of cup action for Cumberland County League teams with the first round of Benevolent Cup games being contested.
An all Premier Division tie between Maryport and Workington Reserves saw the home side come out on top with a 4-2 win.
Ethan Weir scored a double and Cam Moir and Callum Casson added one each for Maryport while Ben Davidson and Aaron Williams replied for Workington.
Penalties were needed to separate Whitehaven Miners and Gosforth after the sides drew 1-1 in normal time. Ryan Doran scored for Miners and Rhys Singleton grabbed the Gosforth goal. Miners went through to the quarter final with a 4-1 shoot-out win.
It was a close game between Carlisle City and Bransty as the sides faced each other for the second time in two weeks. Kie Blair and Bobby Dixon scored for City with Spike Cavaghan pulling one back for Bransty.
Cleator Moor Celtic Reserves continued their fine form with another thumping victory, this time away to Windscale Reserves.
There were doubles for Ben McCarron, Luke Youdale and Jamie Martin in the 9-0 win. Harry Watson, Ethan Thornton and Dan Williamson also got their names on the scoresheet.
Silloth put in a much improved performance and got their first goals of the season but still came out on the losing side against Whitehaven Miners Development.
Gary Messenger hit a hat trick for Silloth but it was Miners who went into the next round as goals from Dale Anderton (2), Cyran Corlett, Kian Simm, Owen Powers and an opponent gave them a 6-4 win. Andrew Blackburn also scored for Silloth.
The last tie of the round was between Whitehaven Amateurs Reserves and Wigton with the Premier Division team coming away with a 3-1 win.
Carl Lightfoot scored a brace and John Heyes added a third while Whitehaven’s goal was scored by Tom Barton.
Cockermouth and Aspatria finally hope to play their delayed County Cup first round tie this Saturday. The winners will be at home to Keswick on November 12.
