Silloth continued their comeback season in Counties 1 Cumbria with a 29-10 win at Workington.

It was probably the Zebras inability to exploit the wind behind them in the first half which eventually cost them.

Silloth coped well against the elements and took the game to Workington with Luke Baker and Tommy Dixon making good yards down the middle.

It eventually paid off with a try by Josh Patterson converted by Luke Johnson.

Workington were still unable to capitalise on the wind behind them and it was Silloth who scored again, a superb effort from Patterson to get over in the corner.

The third quarter of the game was a different story as Workington battered the Silloth defence for the full 20 minutes.

Veteran forward David Todhunter was well to the fore as the Zebras played some lovely rugby and were rewarded with unconverted tries by Sam Robinson and Ben Meil.

The turning point in the game came when Workington looked to be in for a third try which would have given them the lead for the first time.

But Kevin Robinson produced a brilliant tackle on the line and Silloth cleared from there.

In the last 15 minutes Silloth pulled away from their hosts.

Patterson went over to complete a hat-trick of tries and he was followed over by Shane Williams, son of former Carlisle Border Raiders and Workington Town star Barry Williams.

The final try was scored by Jack Robinson with Johnson adding one second half conversion.

Wigton were back at Lowmoor Road for their League game with S Benedict’s which they won convincingly by 55-10.

Conditions were reasonably good which allowed the Greens to play some expansive rugby and they scored nine tries in the process.

The opening try came against the wind when a series of forward drives allowed Stephen Harris to score with Stuart Carruthers converting.

The next two tries were scored by the Wigton wingers, Carruthers and James Paisley, one of which was converted.

Benny’s were not out of it and came back with a lovely try which went unconverted.

However, Wigton scored a converted try just before half-time by Carruthers to lead 26-5 at the break.

The Greens started the second half well and they went on to dominate, scoring further tries from Ali Gaitskill (2), Elliott Armstrong (2) and Rocco Okesene.  Carruthers converted two while the visitors got over for another unconverted try.

Creighton had targeted their home game with Millom for a potential win, but it wasn’t to be as they eventually went down by 24-16.

They had got off to a good start with a penalty from scrum half Dean Lambert, closely followed by an unconverted try by flanker Jason Tait, who pounced on a loose line-out to score.

Millom hit back with a try as Creighton failed to clear their lines, but Tait then crossed again in the corner. The conversion attempt was wide but the home team were happy with a 13-5 lead.

Millom then capitalised on a Creighton error to make the score 13-12 at half time.

The visitors went into the lead with a seven pointer five minutes into the second half before Lambert narrowed the gap immediately with another penalty.

Then followed an unsavoury incident with punches being thrown by both teams. The referee had no choice but to issue a red card to a player from both teams and unfortunately for Creighton it was the outstanding Tait who received his marching orders for them.

Millom pulled away with another converted try, and although Creighton had a try chalked off for a foot in touch they were unable to close the gap.

Cockermouth collected a valuable 19-7 home win over Penrith 2nds in a hard-fought contest at Strawberry How.

The home side played the game at a good tempo, all players getting their hands on the ball and working the Penrith defence hard.

After a penalty was conceded, Dan Woodcock put an excellent kick onto the 22 where the pack did the rest.

They skilfully mauled the ball at a huge pace over the Penrith try line where Ryan Hetherington emerged as the scorer.

Penrith 2nds are competing very well this season at Cumbria League level and bounced back using their big ball carriers and lively full-backs but the Wasps defence was very solid.

It was the Cockermouth pack who scored again on 18 mins after a number of ruck drives, when skipper Jimmy Hunter bounced off two defenders to score. Woodcock converted.

Again Penrith responded well and spent a good period of time in the Wasps half and had to defend hard.

It was good, disciplined defence by the home side and Penrith were not getting the line breaks. However it did take some excellent cover defence from full back Johnny Creighton to deny the Penrith full-back a try.

Wasps showed confidence by playing out of their own 22 and good forward drives led to an edge available. Woodcock and the returning Ed Gate combined well to get Creighton in space and he did the rest with a great finish from 60 yards out, beating three defenders and going under the posts for Woodcock to convert.

For whatever reason, enjoying a 19-0 lead, the Wasps did not come out of the blocks again in the second half and lost all discipline.

From the kick off a lack of communication led to the ball bouncing and Penrith getting possession right back which led to 15 minutes of intense pressure and penalties which resulted in Hetherington being yellow carded.

The second half can be described as good attack from Penrith, great defence from the Wasps but players were guilty time after time of spilling possession or making poor decisions.

The only score of the half came off  the last play of the game when Penrith went through many phases and moved the ball out right through several pairs of hands for Mark Mason to dive in in the corner.

It was splendidly converted from the touchline by fly half Sam Dudson.

Egremont continued their good start to the season with a 51-28 home win against Hawcoat Park.
