A West Highland terrier – with huge sections of fur missing – was found roaming under a Carlisle bridge.
The dog is suffering from a major skin infection which has led to the fur loss and the RSPCA is now trying to trace his owner.
He was found under the Eastern Way road bridge on Durranhill Road by a passer-by. The vet who examined him said his condition was among the worst she had ever seen.
He has not been microchipped and the RSPCA wants anyone who knows how the dog came to be found wandering in such bad condition to come forward.
RSPCA inspector Chris Towler said: “This poor dog was in an atrocious state when he was found. He had significant skin disease with patches of thickening and sores. It was the vet’s opinion that the dog would have been suffering in this condition for months and months.
“He was in dreadful discomfort as his skin was so itchy, while he also has other health issues. Such was the state he was in that he needed to have urgent medical treatment.”

Named Yogi by vet staff, since he was found at around noon on Monday, October 17, he has responded well to his treatment, Mr Towler said.
The inspector added: “Yogi could have strayed, or he could have been abandoned, so we are keen to receive any information from the public so that we can establish a line of enquiry.”
Anyone who may have seen or know of a dog matching Yogi’s description near to or in the Durrranhill Road area is asked to ring the RSPCA appeals line number on 0300 123 8018.
