People are set to get an exclusive sneak peak into an upcoming Cumbrian red squirrel documentary.
‘Cumbrian Red’ is not due to hit screens until Spring 2023, but on November 24, Rheged Centre will show a special preview of the film.
Still currently in production, the documentary explores the tales of Cumbria’s native red squirrels, which are on the verge of extinction.
Terry Abraham, the award winning filmmaker and photographer of the critically acclaimed ‘Life of a Mountain’ BBC trilogy, is behind the new documentary.
He said: “Rarely seen or heard but always a joy to witness, our elusive red squirrels are sadly on the verge of extinction. Volunteering with the Penrith and District Red Squirrel Group over a period of a couple of years, I’ve been fortunate enough to make some good friends including “red scamps” at a couple of locations near my home in the Eden Valley.
“Rusty and co have become so accustomed to my company they climb up my back and even eat from my hand now. I guess it won’t come as no surprise that after the success of my recent documentary ‘Life of a Mountain: Helvellyn’ a fire in my heart ignited and so for the past year I’ve turned my eye and cameras to capture the beauty of our endangered, beloved iconic native reds and share a story with a larger conservation message to inspire and educate viewers of all ages.”

At the special screening, Terry will be sharing insights, anecdotes and tales of the production of his latest passion project film and sharing advanced preview clips of his work.
Popular television broadcaster, author and documentary filmmaker Eric Robson will be providing the narration for both the finished film, and this one-off, preview screening.
There will also be the chance to ask Terry questions following the presentation and profits from the evening’s event will be donated to Penrith and District Red Squirrel Group.
Robert Benson, Chair of Penrith and District Red Squirrel Group said: “Penrith Red Squirrel Group were given a taste of Terry’s extraordinary skill in filming red squirrels in their natural environment and his dedication to helping their conservation in the Summer. We cannot wait for this update preview and hearing more direct from Terry. This will also provide a massive boost to much needed fundraising for reds.”
