For the second time this season Barrow were beaten 1-0 at home by Mansfield Town.
The Stags followed-up last month’s League Two win by making progress in the first round of the FA Cup.
But this was a better performance by the south Cumbrians who would surely have made Monday’s second round draw but for the efforts of Mansfield keeper Christy Pym.
He pulled-off a number of top-class saves to keep his side in front after an early effort to deny Bill Waters from scoring for the fourth game in a row.
On loan from Peterborough Pym then denied a good strike from Josh Kay but his best stop was from a close-range header from Kay who had looked a certain scorer.
The only goal of the game came on 39 minutes when Ollie Hawkins did well to follow-up his own header which had been deflected into his path and he bundled into the net virtually on his knees.
Barrow had strung a five-game unbeaten run together and they had plenty of the ball again in the second-half but couldn’t find a way through a determined Mansfield defence.
Nigel Clough’s side knew they had been in a game but they could have had a second goal after a poor clearance by home keeper Paul Farman fell for Kellan Gordon but he fouled up the chance.
There was another opportunity late on for Stephen McLaughlin but his strong shot was dealt with by Farman.
Barrow substitute Ben Whitfield was closest to salvaging a replay for Barrow with a couple of efforts which were just off target.
Afterwards Barrow boss Pete Wild said: “I was disappointed with the result but not the performance. I thought we gave it a real go and their keeper made some outstanding saves.
“It was also disappointing that their goal came from a set-piece and we pride ourselves on defending those.”
