Cumberland FA chairman Fred Conway died suddenly yesterday at his Maryport home, leaving the county game in shock.
The Cumberland FA offices in Cockermouth will be closed today as a mark of respect to a popular figure in the game.
Fred, originally from Egremont, had been county chairman for over a decade and could be usually seen at weekends watching a game in the county.
He was also chairman of the Cumberland County League and took a keen interest in its development and progress.
A former player in his youth, he represented Egremont teams and later as a manager had much success with Mirehouse Saturday and Sunday teams.
The Cumberland FA said on their Facebook page: “Everyone at Cumberland FA is shocked and devastated by the passing of our chair and FA representative Fred Conway.
“The county will make a further statement in due course but for now our sympathy and thoughts are with his partner Vicky and his family.”
