Bus service slashed this weekend for rail line affected by train derailment

Rail passengers are advised not to travel between Carlisle and Skipton – because of a lack of buses available this weekend,

Train firm Northern said it will not be running services on Sunday, November 27.

Train services have been affected by the recent derailment of a freight train near Carlisle and are not currently running between these stations.

Customers are also advised to check before they travel on services between Carlisle and Haltwhistle as not all replacement buses will be running on this route.

Tony Baxter, regional director at Northern, said: “We apologise for the significant disruption and inconvenience this will cause to our customers.

“There are no replacement buses on these routes, which are not operating due to the derailment of a freight train close to Carlisle.

Despite attempts to recruit buses to replace the train services, unfortunately we have not been able to do so this weekend.

“Therefore, customers are advised not to travel between Skipton and Carlisle and some other routes may have limited numbers of road replacement transport available.”

A local bus service will be running in the area.

Northern is also warning customers that because of strike action by train driver’s union ASLEF on Saturday 26th November, the train operator cannot operate any services across its network.

Customers are advised not to try to travel on this day as there will be major disruption across the whole rail network.

Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, operating nearly 2,000 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.

On Sunday, 11 December Northern’s new timetable comes into effect and all customers, especially those who have made regular journeys on the same train times, are advised to check online journey planners before they travel to ensure their service operates at the same time and calls at the same stations.
