A Cumbrian MP has met with ambulance and fire chiefs in a bid to keep an ambulance stationed in part of the South Lakes.
The North West Ambulance Service has operated an ambulance to cover the Cartmel Peninsula from a base in Grange for 20 years.
However the Kents Bank Road premises will no longer be available from August.
It was feared that it meant the region’s service would be put at risk and MP Tim Farron, who represents Westmorland and Lonsdale, has been working with the service, local councillors and the fire service to find a replacement base.
Mr Farron said that during the meeting, the ambulance service ‘stated categorically’ that its intention was to stay in Grange and was working to relocate to Grange Fire Station.
A petition launched by Mr Farron and local Liberal Democrat councillors Pete Endsor, Jenny Boak and Sue Sanderson, calling for the service to be saved, has gathered more than 1,300 signatures.
Mr Farron said: “I’m really grateful to both the ambulance and fire services for meeting with me. This is an absolutely vital service and so it’s crucially important that we find a new home for the ambulance.
“There was a clear intention from both parties for the ambulance to be moved to the fire station and a lot of work is going on behind the scenes to make this happen.
“The key now is sealing the deal as quickly as possible to give peace of mind to local residents.”
