Ulverston’s Sir John Barrow Monument will be lit up tonight in support of the NSPCC.
The 100ft monument on Hoad Hill will be turn green for the children’s charity, which is also asking people to pull on their trainers or walking boots to take part in its 5k Walk for Children today, which will also raise funds for Childline.
People can do the walk wherever they are and whoever they are with.
Mayor of Ulverston Michelle Scrogham said: “This evening the monument will be illuminated in green in support of NSPCC on the longest night of the year. For children facing abuse, the winter nights are dark, long and lonely.
“At Christmas, children should feel happy and safe. But if young people feel scared, traumatised or that they have no one else to turn to, Childline is always there for them, even at Christmas and New Year.’’
Deborah Sefton, NSPCC community fundraising manager for the North West, said: “We’re extremely grateful for the support given by Ulverston Town Council to help raise awareness of the NSPCC’s Walk for Children campaign. The charity relies on public donations for the majority of its income, which is why we’re calling on people in Ulverston and Cumbria to help us support children this festive season.
“By joining our Walk for Children, every step participants take and every pound that they raise will help Childline be here for all children, even on the longest night of the year. Together let’s make a difference.”
