A £20 million Lake District museum is hoping to attract more visitors over the winter period by offering outdoor shelters.
Windermere Jetty Museum, operated by Lakeland Arts and paid for by fund-raising and the Heritage Lottery Fund, opened in 2019.
To offer visitors extra reasons to stay at the museum, earlier this year, it commissioned craftsman Charlie Whinney to create outdoor sculptures that could be used as extra seating for the cafe as a pilot to enhance its outdoor catering.
Its retrospective planning application for the sculptures has now been approved by the Lake District National Park Authority.
The application by Lakeland Arts, said the sculpture area was a means of increasing ‘dwell time’ for visitors.
It added: “As visitor numbers have been lower than expected, we hope to keep the shelters to maximise our income opportunities, especially over the winter periods.”
The sculptures were set up as part of a funding programme from grant-making organisation Garfield Weston.
