Workington Reds maintain unbeaten run

Workington Reds maintained their unbeaten run with a hard-earned 1-1 draw at Clitheroe.

The hosts had won at Borough Park earlier in the season and were tough opponents as manager Danny Grainger had predicted.

Reds had their chances, but so too did Clitheroe and overall a draw was probably a fair result to the contest.

Reds had taken the lead on nine minutes when Lewis Reilly was fouled in the box.

Record goal-scorer Scott Allison stepped up and made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Ruben Jerome had an opportunity almost immediately to double the lead but fluffed the chance.

As it happened the lead lasted only five minutes when Reds were unable to cut out a cross which found Sefton Gonzales and then the back of the net.

Debutant Abimbola Obasoto was a real threat down the left for the home side with pace and skill to test the Workington defence.

Clitheroe dominated the second-half and Workington had to dig in to keep them at bay.

Sam Smith, back from suspension, was Reds hero 12 minutes from the end. Max Cane really got hold of a volley ten yards out and with Jim Atkinson beaten Smith produced a superb goal-line clearance.

Yet at the other end Reilly had two opportunities to snatch it for the Reds. He had a free header from 12 yards but put it wide and then turned to fire over the bar a couple of minutes later.

The second-half was a bit scrappy compared to an entertaining end-to-end first period, with both sides guilty of giving the ball away too easily.

Reds boss Grainger said: “We knew it would be a test against a good side and a draw was probably a fair result.

“But that’s four points out of six against sides around the play-off spots with us and we have only lost once in 16 games.

“If we can do that over the second half of the season we will be where we want to be.

“The lads will have a night off tomorrow and then back to it on Thursday ready for another test against Prescot at home on Saturday.

“They have a presence up top and they will get balls into our box whenever they can. We know what to expect and will be ready.”
