Penrith chairman Billy Williams has seen a lot of football over the last 50 years.
But in all that time he has never seen a goalkeeping performance as good as Aaran Taylor produced for Penrith at Ashington.
The Cumbrians lost the Northern League clash 2-1 but if it hadn’t been for Taylor it could have been seven or eight.
“It was just unbelievable and some of the saves were out of this world. I have not seen anything better in all my time in the game,” said Williams.
Indeed it looked late in the game that Taylor’s heroics would help Penrith to an unlikely point against one of the top sides in the division.
On 72 minutes Luke Hunter put Penrith level when he fired in a Johnny Murray cross after they had trailed to a Robbie Dale goal on 43 minutes.
But five minutes later Adam Johnson scored what proved to be the winner when he beat the hard-working Taylor.
Included in his catalogue of excellent saves had been one to deny Dale from the penalty spot on 32 minutes.
Ashington, now managed by Cumbrian and former Penrith boss Andy Coyles, have spent big with the sole aim of winning promotion from the Northern League.
“Our end-of-season position won’t be determined by matches against the likes of Ashington but how we do against the teams around us.
“We have three vital games coming up which fit into that category, including one against the bottom team Thornaby,” said Williams.
