The Cumbria League resumed with a very good result for Creighton as they beat Wigton 15-10.
Based on the performances prior to Christmas Richard Liddle’s men were quietly confident prior to the match against fourth in the table Wigton.
Their hopes were bolstered further by the return of flankers Chris Marsh from long term injury, and Sam Christie from suspension.
It was heavy going and playing into the wind Creighton made a bright, taking the lead after 10 minutes through a Keenan Foster penalty following a ruck offence.
The contact area was to prove a problem for Wigton throughout the game with the inability to get clean ball.
However they did go in front for the only time when they won the ball back from the restart and were able to go through the phases before Will Hodgson finished well by scoring in the corner.
This was really the only highlight for Wigton as the rest of the half followed a pattern of spilled ball in contact and passes being dropped.
Creighton had the upper-hand in the scrums, and they restored their lead after taking the ball against the head on 22 minutes.
It resulted in scrum half Ben Atkinson crossing for a well taken try which Foster improved with a superb conversion.
The home side extended their lead three minutes later, when stand off Ben Jordan executed a pin point accurate cross-field kick for winger Tom Riley to score in the corner for a 15-5 interval lead.
Although Wigton dominated the second half they still lost too much ball in contact and only made the breakthrough three minutes from the end.
Ben Postlethwaite scored a try in the corner to cap a promising individual display.
There were anxious moments for Creighton from the restart as Wigton commendably tried to run the ball from their own line, but the home team hung on for a well-deserved win.
For Wigton it left lots of areas to improve on, individually and as a team moving forward.
