Whitehaven will have up to three trialists in the squad for Sunday’s opening pre-season game at the LEL Arena.
Haven entertain local rivals Workington Town in the annual Ike Southward Memorial Trophy.
Director of rugby Gary Charlton said: “They have been recommended to us by people we know in the game who believe they could do us a job.
“Obviously we want to see them play so they will get a run-out against Town and it will be up to them to show their capabilities and earn a contract.
“They are all currently without a club and looking to earn a place for the coming season.”
Whitehaven’s pre-season preparations have been hit by injuries, illness and departures so are about two weeks behind where they would want to be.
But they have follow-up games against a Wigan side (January 22) and also one from Castleford (January 29) before the end of the month.
Two new Australian forwards Lucas Castle and Lachlan Lanskey have been training here for over a week and will be in the squad to face Town.
A late try from Matty Hanson gave Workington a narrow victory in last year’s ‘Ike game’ at Derwent Park.
