Close battle for Workington Reds and Cleator Moor Celtic under-18s

Workington Reds and Cleator Moor Celtic are clearly locked in a close battle for League honours this season at Under-18s level.

Both have beaten the other teams in the West Cumbria Youth League and when they’ve come up against each other have a win apiece to show for their efforts.

The second encounter was at Lakes College where Reds avenged a 1-0 defeat at Cleator Moor with victory by the same margin.

Having finished with each other it could be a case of who blinks first and if they continue to beat the rest of the opposition will probably be involved in a play-off for the title with goal difference not taken into account.

Reds probably shaded the first half on chances and scored the only goal on 30 minutes when a cross from Thomas Downes was deflected into the net by a Celtic defender.

But five minutes later Celtic should have been level when they were awarded a penalty but Ben McCarron’s spot kick was saved by Scott Paden-Gale.

There were opportunities for Reds, the best falling to Josh Palmer when presented with a one-on-one but he couldn’t capitalise.

Both teams played some attractive, eye-catching football and it was an even second-half without any further addition to the score-line.
