Whitehaven have confirmed that one of their trialists likely to feature against Workington Town on Sunday is Kells’ prop Ross Ainley.
Haven are set to have a look at three or four trialists in the game at the LEL Arena for the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy.
Ainley, 26, has done enough in training with Jonty Gorley’s group to warrant a run-out in the three friendlies that the club has organised before the start of the Betfred Championship season.
Last season Kells won the National Conference Division One title to earn promotion back to the Premier Division. But since then brothers Jordan and Aaron Burns have turned professional with Workington Town.
However, over the years the Whitehaven amateur club has been a constant source of playing material for pro clubs both in and out of the county.
Current coach Peter Smith said: “Ross has a good engine and is a tough player with a very good attitude. To be honest I can’t speak highly enough of him.”
