A man accused of attempting to murder his partner at an address in Carlisle has appeared in front of a judge at the city’s crown court.
Matthew Ryan, 38, faces one charge, which alleges that he attempted to murder the woman on the afternoon of December 17.
The charge he faces arises out of an incident at Ellesmere Way in Carlisle during which the complainant is alleged to have been stabbed multiple times — primarily to the torso and back, according to the prosecution at an earlier magistrates’ court hearing.
Police said in the immediate aftermath of the incident that the woman, in her 50s, had suffered life threatening injuries. She was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle and her condition was initially said to be critical but stable having placed into an induced coma.
A Cumbria police spokesman said today that she had since been discharged from hospital.
That update came as Ryan appeared in front of Judge Nicholas Barker at Carlisle Crown Court this morning.
During an eight-minute hearing, Ryan spoke to confirm his name and date of birth. Appearing in court remotely over a video link, he listened as defence barrister Judith McCullough requested that he did not enter a plea to the charge he faces at this stage.
Instead she asked for the plea hearing to be postponed to enable a doctor to prepare a report on the defendant in due course.
A provisional date for a trial in front of a jury was listed and this would be due to start on July 3. It was agreed that the likely time estimate of a trial would be three to four days.
A timetable for the progression of the case was outlined in front of Judge Barker, who asked for the next crown court hearing to take place on March 10, when updates will be provided by counsel in the case.
In the meantime Ryan, of Bannisdale Way, Carlisle, has been remanded in custody.
