Barrow Island hope that the Rugby Football League will help them out over their marathon trip to Portsmouth in the Challenge Cup.
The National Conference Division Two side have been drawn away to the Royal Navy – and that will mean a 600-mile round trip.
The game is being played on Saturday, February 11 (kick-off 1pm) at the United Services Recreation Ground – which will mean an overnight stay on the Friday.
Club veteran official, secretary John Jefferson says the cost of the coach will cost upwards of £3,000 – and then there will be the overnight stay on top.
He says: “We’re trying to raise funds ourselves and we’ve also applied to the RFL for a grant through the help of Trevor Hunt, chair at the NCL.
“We have lost players to the professional ranks this season and our coach is still trying to work out which players will available, with time off to travel.
“Despite all this we’re really looking forward to the game. While we are a long way apart geographically there are links between ourselves and the Royal Navy through our ship-building history.
“At the end of the day we are determined to go there, give as good an account of ourselves as we can, and enjoy the occasion.”
