A man has appeared in court and admitted that his careless driving caused the death of a pedestrian 12 days after a crash in Windermere.
Olwyn Mary Kirkby, who was 71 and from Hexham, was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital after police responded to reports that she and another pedestrian — a man also from Hexham — had been involved in a collision with a red Citroen C3 at around 8.45pm on Friday, December 4 2020.
It happened at the junction of Ellerthwaite Road and New Road in Windermere.
Ms Kirkby died 12 days later, on December 16. Police reported at the time that the male pedestrian was making a good recovery while the car driver was unhurt and had been assisting officers with enquiries.
Today, 50-year-old Joseph Lancaster, of Ghyll Road, Windermere, appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court in Barrow.
During a hearing in front of a district judge, Lancaster pleaded guilty to causing the death of Olwyn Kirkby by driving without due and attention.
The district judge, John Temperley, adjourned the case and ordered the preparation of a probation service pre-sentence report.
Lancaster’s case was committed for sentence to Carlisle Crown Court, where he is due to be sentenced by a judge on Friday, March 10.
In the meantime he was granted unconditional bail and given an interim driving disqualification.
