A section of the A596 at Flimby will close overnight for resurfacing.

Work by Balfour Beatty and Connect Roads is set to start on Sunday, February 19.

The road will be closed from 7pm to 6am for five nights.

It will then be closed again from Sunday February 26 for five nights and it is hoped work will be completed by Saturday March 4.

During the overnight road closures, diversions are in place as follows:

A596 southbound vehicles

From Flimby, travel north along the A596 for 2.5km to its junction with the A594 at Netherhall Corner, Maryport; turn right onto the A594 for 9.4km to its junction with the A595 at Belle Vue Roundabout.

Take the third exit on the A595 for 1.4km to its junction with the A66 Fitz Roundabout. Take the third exit on the A66 for 5.75km to its junction with the A595 Chapel Brow Roundabout.

Take the second exit on the A66 from Stanbeck Roundabout for 4.0km, take the first exit on Ramsay Brow for 0.8Km to the junction with A596 and turn right onto Bridge Street for 1.6km to the junction with Northside Roundabout, then take the second exit on the A596 for 2.1km, and follow it to Lowca Lane, where the closure ends.

A596 northbound vehicles

Travel in the reverse direction of the above, taking the appropriate exits off the roundabouts.

Cumbria County Council said that the roadworks were likely to delay access to properties, so villagers will need to wait until it is safe to be escorted through the area.

Councillor Keith Little, Cumbria County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We understand that these works may be frustrating and disruptive for the community, and we do apologise for this; however, this resurfacing project in Flimby is necessary and will greatly improve the road.

“In order to minimise disruption to the community, we will be working on the roads during the night. I would like to thank the Flimby community, and businesses, in advance, for their support and patience while we improve the road network.”
