
An investigation into the cause of a blaze which gutted a bakery in Maryport is likely to take several days, fire chiefs said.
Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service was called out at around 2.50am on Wednesday to the Bakehouse, on Senhouse Street.
Emergency services – including 10 fire engines and specialist vehicles – attended the incident and police closed Senhouse Street, Crosby Street and Curzon Street while the fire was brought under control.
The fire completely gutted the four-storey building and contractor Stobbarts Ltd was called in demolish the building overnight on Wednesday and make the area safe.
Senhouse Street will reopen as soon as Stobbarts Ltd completes its work.
An investigation was launched immediately by Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and police.
A spokesman said: “Weare continuing our investigation to identify the cause of the fire. This is a complex fire investigation which will continue over several days with both on and off site activity.
“An investigation of this length and nature is normal for the size and scale of this incident.”
