Maryport and neighbours Glasson Rangers opened their youth season with an entertaining clash between their respective Under-6s.
Simon Pattinson, one of the Maryport coaches, said both clubs would get a lot out of the game at the start of what will be a long season.
He said: “What pleased us, apart from the youngsters enjoying playing the game, was the number of people watching – from grandparents, parents to aunts and uncles there was a really good turnout and a good family atmosphere.
“Both teams did well in their first game with some good tackling and some excellent tries being scored.
“We had 18 players and Glasson, who are just starting up at this age group, had a dozen with some really promising kids on show from both teams.
“It was a nice curtain-raiser for the season especially as we are putting on a youth festival at the club next weekend when a number of local clubs are sending teams.”
