Workington Reds have revealed their plans to celebrate Non League Day this weekend.
It hasn’t happened a lot, but on Saturday Reds do have a home game against Glossop North End and can mark the special day.
Vice chairman Richard Lewthwaite is delighted that the club has the opportunity to mark the occasion at a home game.
He said: “For a change we have a home fixture so that gives us the chance to get properly involved in Non League Day.
“The national initiative is designed to get football fans to back their local sides on a weekend where the Premier League and the Championship don’t have fixtures.
“The Reds have engaged with the local grassroots scene to offer free entry to all West Cumbria Youth League players and a discounted offer for parents.
“Players simply need to attend wearing their own club colours and they, along with their parents, will be admitted at the dedicated turnstile in a no fuss approach. No bookings are necessary and cash will be taken on the gate.
“I have a strong connection with the local Youth League as chairman and wanted to offer the kids and parents something in return for all their efforts in making our League as good and as successful as it is.
“We have over 3,000 players from age seven to 18 and this number is growing every year.
“Hopefully they will see a great game as Reds continue their push for promotion through the play-offs.”
Indeed, there will be hope too that a good proportion of them will remain Workington fans for life.
On the day Reds are also a group of Groundhoppers who will be entertained and shown round the ground ahead of kick-off.
Around 20 have hired a coach and are travelling from the North East.
Last season an inaugural Groundhoppers Day at Borough Park proved a great success.
