The first phase of work to upgrade Kirkstone Pass is on track to finish this weekend, county leaders said.
Contractors are working on a 6.8km section of the A592 between Brothers Water on the northern end and Hird Wood on the southern end of Kirkstone Pass.
This first planned full road closure will finish this Sunday. Work accomplished has included the new drainage crossings and associated work.
The next road closure is due to begin on Monday, June 5 to install crash barriers and will continue until Friday June 30, weather permitting.
This will be a 24-hour, seven days a week closure, between Brothers Water and the Kirkstone Inn.
Local businesses will be open as usual and The Kirkstone Inn will remain accessible throughout this closure period via Windermere or Ambleside. Sykeside Camping Park and Brotherswater Inn will remain accessible throughout the closures via Glenridding.
The road closure will also affect cyclists, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles.
Additional road closures will then take place on the following dates, weather permitting:
- 11 September 11 to carry out resurfacing – over a two-week closure
- March 1 2024 to finalise the resurfacing – a three-week closure
Cumbria County Council has been overseeing the work, part of the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Project. From April 1, it will be the responsibility of Westmorland and Furness Council.
