Wath Brow Hornets were denied by a late score from West Hull in a closely-fought NCL Premier Division clash.
Last year’s League Leaders Shield winners snatched a converted try in the closing minutes to edge the contest 14-12 and make their long journey back to Humberside a happy one.
The win put them on top of the table, which is exactly where Wath Brow would have been if they could have held on for a little longer.
The visitors had led 8-0 at half-time after Tom Verity scored a try after 22 minutes which Ryan Wilson converted. A Wilson penalty added to West’s advantage before half-time.
Wath Brow got themselves back into the contest on 53 minutes when Jay Weatherill scored a try, which was converted by Sam Curwen. Then on the hour Charlie Tomlinson barged over and Curwen’s conversion had Wath Brow favourites to go top.
But never-say-die West Hull kept going and Josh Wood got over for the levelling try, with Wilson’s conversion giving them the victory.

Whitehaven neighbours Kells have now moved ahead of the Hornets into third place after they accounted for York Acorn 18-10.
Kells made a particularly strong start and Harry Watson went in twice inside the first 20 minutes with Ross Gainford converting one and also adding a penalty.
Acorn came back into the contest and a good spell from them saw two tries by Ben Dale and Josh Parker, one of which was converted by Antony Chilton.
It remained 12-10 throughout most of a hard-fought second-half but Kells were able to clinch the victory with a try from Scott Lofthouse nine minutes from the end, which Gainford improved.

In Division One Egremont were unable to build on an impressive start at Crosfields which saw them establish a 12-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes.
By half-time they were looking at a 16-12 deficit and after a fairly even second-half they lost out 30-22.
Second rower Arron Turnbull emerged as Egremont’s strongest performer and he had put his side ahead with a try on two minutes which Kris Tyson converted. It was looking good when John Paul Brocklebank added the second try on 18 minutes, again converted by Tyson.

But Crosfields rallied and scored three tries before half-time to seize the initiative. Two of them were converted and Egremont had to start again.
However it was the home side who scored two more tries right at the start of the second half to open up a 24-12 advantage.
That sparked a good response by the west Cumbrians and tries from Tyson and Leon Crellin, one converted by Tyson had them right back in it at 24-22.

It could have gone either way but right at the end man of the match, full-back Jamie Abram nipped over for his hat-trick try to secure the points for the hosts.
Barrow Island got back to winning way in Division Two when they beat Normanton Knights 22-10.
That represented a good come-back by the home side as they had been 10-0 down before tries from Cameron Currie and Will Hadwen got them back into the contest.
Normanton had one of their leading players Jason Crooks sin-binned after 67 minutes for contact with the head and during his absence the Islanders got in front.
Currie went over for his second try which Adam Jackson converted and then a Jackson penalty was followed by a late try from Hadwen which Jackson converted.
Ellenborough Rangers returned to winning ways after their first set-back at Millom last week when they beat Eastmoor Dragons 56-4.
Zac Olstrom who spent part of last season with Workington Town, has returned to his old amateur club and led the charge with four tries. Also rattling up the points was Owen Hoyles with a try and eight goals.
Elbra, who had led 22—0 at half-time, scored their other tries through John Todd, Rhys Burr, Matthew Bell, Jordan Ostle and Kai Gilhespy.
Millom, along with Ellenborough, are among four teams jointly leading the table as they scored a crucial 26-24 win over Beverley – one of six teams sharing the leadership at start of play.
It was a good recovery by the Woollybacks as they trailed 24-14 at the break and were successful in shutting out the visitors in the second-half.
Just as importantly they scored points at the other end with second-half tries from Ethan Kelly and Jordan Lehrle, both converted by Lee Postlethwaite, to secure an exciting victory. In the first-half Millom had scored tries through Jackson Evans (2) and Jarty Robinson.
Seaton produced easily their best performance of the season to register a fine 26-20 home win over Drighlington, who had also been among the six joint leaders.
Billy Southward, grandson of the legendary Ike Southward, produced a fine performance as he helped himself to two tries while Luke Crossland also crossed twice. Joe Curwen also got over the Drighlington line while Jon Carl Bryan kicked two goals.
The only Cumbrian losers in Division Three were Hensingham who went down 40-6 at Leigh East.
They had actually gone in front with a try and conversion by William Burns after just five minutes and were ahead 6-4 at the break.
But it all went wrong in the second half after Jesse Joe Parker was sent-off for dissent and Leigh East ran away with the game.
