The A590 at Greenodd is closed.
Cumbria police said the road was closed both ways and there was slow traffic due to accident investigation work between Greenodd Roundabout and the Bouth turn- off.
Emergency services were called at around 3.35am.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
