After a dramatic end to Workington’s first Uppies and Downies game of 2023, the Downies have it all to play for on Tuesday.
Uppie Leon Dymatrowski caught the ball and ran up to the hailing point at Workington Hall to bring his side a much-needed victory.
The traditional no-rules mass football games has been played in the town for hundreds of years.
Hundreds of people turned out to watch the first game, which started on the Cloffocks at 6.30pm when the specially-made leather ball was thrown off by 13-year-old Darcie Saffill.
There are two more games to come – on Tuesday and the following Saturday – and we’ll be bringing you live updates as the games develop. Downies won the 2022 series so it really is all to play for on Tuesday.
Uppies have to get the ball to Workington Hall and throw the ball in the air three times – hailing the ball – to be victorious. Downies have to get the ball down to the harbourside and do the same to win.
Meanwhile, here are some more photos from the Good Friday game, taken by our photographer Mark Regan – and remember to join us on Friday!
