Wigton warmed up for this Saturday’s Papa John’s Plate clash with Hartlepool by completing an impressive league win against Millom.

The 33-19 victory to round off their Counties 1 Conference season will put them in good heart for the knockout clash.

They host Hartlepool bidding to reach the quarter finals of the new RFU knockout competition.

The game with Millom was a real contrast in styles as a big, powerful visiting side tried to deny ball and space to a home team with an average age of 22.

The early exchanges saw Wigton’s scrum under severe pressure, but once the ball got into the wide channels the home backs looked lively.

The first try was scored by 17-year-old Jack Brough, making his senior League debut, following a series of quick tap penalties taken by the Greens. Elliot Armstrong converted.

From the re-start Wigton moved the ball wide and went through several phases before powerful centre Matty Harrison burst through to score with Armstrong again landing the conversion.

Millom hit back with a converted try to make it 14-7 and then had a five minute spell in the Wigton 22 where they tried desperately to draw level.

The Wigton scrum held firm, the scramble defence was good and it proved a pivotal point in the game, denying Millom any points.

At the start of the second-half Wigton attacked out wide and following more tap penalties Owen Sinclair was put through a gap for a try.

From the re-start Harrison made another break for a try, converted by Armstrong.

Millom then got some good field position from a couple of penalties and scored another converted try.

With the big Millom pack tiring in the sun Wigton continued to try and attack outside and a good pass by Billy Stafford put Harrison away again.

As he was being tackled he supported to the supporting Armstrong who scored under the posts and added the conversion.

With the game won Wigton tried to run the ball from behind their own posts but couldn’t get into space and Millom won the turnover eight metres out.

Following a series of scrums they scored the last try of the game.
