Whitehaven’s unbeaten run in the West Lancashire League came to an end in surprising fashion – beaten 2-0 at bottom side Milnthorpe Corinthians.
The first goal came on ten minutes when Danny Taylor found the net from six yards after Whitehaven had failed to clear.
It stayed that way until the hour mark when keeper Aaron Carter brought down a Milnthorpe forward and Jenson Butterworth converted from the penalty spot.
Milnthorpe also hit the woodwork on two occasions and, in truth, Whitehaven never got going.
The Whitehaven manager Jon-Karl Benson said: “The score-line was a fair one. Milnthorpe deserved the win as we struggled all over the pitch if I’m honest.
“It was a very disappointing performance considering the run we’ve been on.
“We were confident coming into this game. Maybe we were a little too confident because if you’re not at it in this League someone will give you a bloody nose. On their day anyone can beat anyone.
“We’ll go through the video which won’t be fun for some players.
“But we’ve got to take it on the chin, learn from it and try to prevent it happening again.
“We play Turton on Saturday who will always give you a game and have been really good in the last few weeks.”
Meanwhile Whitehaven have announced the signing of George Frampton from Keswick as the newest member of the first team squad.
Carl Short, Whitehaven’s first team coach, said: “George has joined us through the back end of the season and has been excellent.
“A combative, holding midfielder with an eye for a pass he has fitted in seamlessly with the team and all the lads.”
The club chairman Luke Johnson added: “I have seen him play a number of times over the past few weeks and know that he has already fitted in well and look forward to his future at Whitehaven.”
On Saturday Whitehaven travel to Turton Tigers followed by a trip to Burscough on April 22; Poulton at home on April 29 and the final game will be away to Slyne with Hest on Bank Holiday Monday, May 1.
