Workington Zebra Finches aim to complete their League campaign on a high ahead of their date at Twickenham when they travel to Kirkby Stephen this Sunday for their encounter with bottom club Upper Eden Eagles (kick off 3pm), writes John Hastings.
For all their derring-do exploits in reaching the RFU Junior Plate Final, Workington haven’t been able to translate that success in Division 2 North.
Ironically, the Finches’ last victory in the league came against the Eagles at The Ellis in January, when they triumphed 25-0.
Since then, Workington have lost four in a row, including three at home – the most recent against Ryton Roses, when despite tries from Sophie Weir, Megan Donald and Juliet Porter they just came short as Ryton won 30-20.
In fairness, it should be pointed out that they have been most unlucky with injuries to several key players including their inspirational captain Charlotte Cammack, powerhouse flanker Beth Adams and scrum-half dynamo Stephanie Ratcliffe.
A victory this Sunday will give Workington the perfect boost ahead of their Twickenham date with Avonmouth Claires on May 1 – incidentally, the kick off time for that match has still to be confirmed.
