Workington Comets have suffered an injury blow less than a month from their relaunch in the National Development League.
Highly-rated 15-year-old Luke Harrison was racing in an amateur event at Scunthorpe on Sunday when he crashed leading the race.
He is currently in a Sheffield hospital with shoulder and back injuries, as well as a bruised lung.
Comets joint promoter Steve Lawson said: “At the moment Luke is undergoing more scans so we are hoping that the injuries aren’t as bad as they first sounded.
“They were initially reported as two broken vertebrae and a broken shoulder after he hit the fence.
“Hopefully the scans will show them not being as severe as that and he’s soon back on his feet again.
“Luke is a great prospect and we believe is capable of trebling his assessed average of just three.”
Comets fans will get their first chance to see the team together at press and practice day which will be held from noon on Saturday. May 6.
The season starts a week later, on May 13 when the Comets entertain Edinburgh.
