Workington Comets have brought in a temporary replacement for their injured teenage rider Luke Harrison.
Kelsey Dugard, the 24-year-old son of former World Finalist and England international Martin, has been named as the temporary replacement for Harrison who continues to make progress from injuries received in a track crash at Scunthorpe recently.
The diagnosis is not as bad as was first feared last weekend when he was injured in a track crash at Scunthorpe. He is back home, moving freely and looking at a return to racing in July.
Sussex-based Dugard is the fourth generation of his family to take up speedway and is the latest part of a dynasty synonymous with the Eastbourne Eagles. Comets fans from the seventies will remember his uncle’s Eric and Paul as opposition during that era.
Starting out with his local club in 2015 when Eastbourne were a National League side, he went on to spend the next three seasons alternating between the Eagles and fellow National League outfit Isle of Wight with 2017 being his most productive season achieving an average around the 5-point mark and gaining outings in the Championship.
A move north in 2021 saw him link up with Newcastle Gems, the Brough Park outfits second team competing in the National League but his season was cut short when finances caused them to withdrew from the league mid-season.
Since then, his racing has been confined to the non-league operation run by the Isle of Wight but the link-up with the Comets gives another opportunity in the third tier of the sport.
Coming in with a starting average of just over 3 points he will slot into Harrison’s berth alongside fellow reserve Elliot Kelly.
