A Cumbrian man inspired by ‘Marathon Man 365’ Gary McKee is close to completing an intense 30 day running challenge.
Chris Young, 30, from Cleator Moor, began his ’30 Squared Challenge’ on April 1, running 30 miles for 30 days to celebrate his 30th birthday to raise £30,000 for two charities close to his heart.
So far, he has raised a total of £12,742 for Hospice at Home West Cumbria and Hearts of Gold West Cumbria, who provide a helping hand for local families in need due to the cost of living crisis by providing food, clothing or household items.
Over the course of the month Chris’ friends, family and local community have donated money and supported him, with some running alongside him and cheering him on from the streets.
Chris said: “The challenge has been enjoyable, but not without its setbacks. Between cellulitis, illness and a setback mentally it’s made each completed day that little bit more special.
“As with life there’s always tough days and they’re not all pretty, but sometimes all you’ve got to do is survive the bad days! A winner is a dreamer that never gives up and I never started this challenge with even a thought of giving up.
“The same way that the two organisations I’ve decided to support don’t give up on the people that turn to them for support”.
Chris’ challenge will come to an end this Sunday 30th April, where he will cross the finish line at Hensingham Rugby Club at 1.30pm and complete his final 30 mile run – meaning his has run a whopping total of 900 miles over the month.
Following the completion of his challenge an event will be held at Hensingham Rugby Club with live music and food.
Tickets are on sale for £20, with all proceeds going to his challenge. If you would like more information or to buy tickets for the event, contact Chris on: 07595 452355.
