Plans to extend a Michelin star restaurant on the edge of the Lake District have been been given the green light.
Cartmel’s Rogan & Co – part of Simon Rogan’s empire – wants to create a bar area and extend the kitchen as part of its plans.
The work at Rogan & Co in Devonshire Square will also see a courtyard extension and the toilets moved.
A design statement submitted by John Coward Architects in support of the application described Rogan & Co, which holds one Michelin star, as a small restaurant with 47 covers.
The document said there was limited space to welcome guests and invite them to relax with a drink before dining, which was typically expected of restaurants of this calibre.
It added: “The existing kitchens in Rogan & Co are towards the rear of the building in a series of small rooms. The arrangement is difficult, as the space for food preparation, storage and wash-up is very restricted.”
An extension will link the existing restaurant at Rogan & Co and a ground-floor letting room in L’Enclume House. This room is accessed via a courtyard.
L’Enclume House – separate from L’Enclume, the three-Michelin-starred restaurant nearby – is already joined to Rogan & Co, with the two operating as one building, and the courtyard structure will create an additional link.
The ground-floor letting room at L’Enclume House is to become the bar and the room’s bathroom remodelled to form Rogan & Co’s new toilet area – allowing the existing toilets to be moved and facilitating the courtyard extension.
The design statement said the courtyard structure would be significantly glazed to provide a very bright and airy space.
It said the kitchen would be extended into part of Rogan’s currently used as restaurant space. A new catering kitchen is then to be installed in this larger area.
“Partitions, all of which are modern, will need to be removed to accommodate the change,” said the design statement.
Both full and listed planning consent have been granted by Westmorland and Furness Council for the scheme.
