It’s a big week for Workington Comets and the Oxford Chargers as they get ready to launch their campaigns in the National Development League.
Certainly Oxford boss Peter Schroeck says the future is bright for the NDL as the third-tier campaign gets into full swing.
Schroeck’s Chargers side launch their season at home to Leicester – who knocked them out in the play-offs last year en route to the title – at Cowley on Wednesday.
And there is also huge interest in the revival of Workington, with the Comets set to go into action for the first time at Northside on Saturday against Edinburgh.
Schroeck said: “We really enjoyed going wheel-to-wheel with Leicester last year. Not only were the fixtures great for the development of our riders, but they also created a brilliant spectacle for the fans.
“I’m confident we’ll get more of the same this year. And with Workington rejoining British Speedway’s third tier, there has never been a better time to get behind the future stars of our sport.”
The Comets promotion team of Andrew Bain and Steve Lawson were delighted at the response they got from the fans at Saturday’s press and practice day.
“None of us could sleep the night before and I imagine it will be the same ahead of Saturday’s first League meeting. But it’s been great to see the dream become a reality.
“We haven’t set any long term targets and really what we want to do is win our first match against Edinburgh and hope the riders can gel as a team as the season unfolds,” said Lawson.
