Two former Workington Reds loanees figured last night in a record-breaking EFL play-off semi-final.
Michael Smith and Will Vaulks scored the first two spot kicks as Sheffield Wednesday went on to beat Peterborough 5-3 on penalties in the League One semi-final.
They had to over-turn a 4-0 first leg deficit and managed it with the last kick of time added on at the end of 90 minutes.
Posh managed a goal in the first half of extra time and Wednersday only levelled the tie on aggregate with their fifth goal late in the second-half to take it to penalties.
Smith, who had scored from the penalty spot early in the game, repeated the trick in the shoot-out and Vaulks, a late substitute also made no mistake.
Centre-forward Smith had been a Darlington player when he was loaned to Reds in 2010 but the 19-year-old failed to score in six uneventful outings for the west Cumbrians.
Since then he has spent time at Charlton, Swindon, Portsmouth, Bury and several loan spells but his longest and most prolific time was with Rotherham (188 games and 52 goals).
Now aged 31 Smith joined Wednesday last season and so far has 18 goals in 40 appearances.
Vaulks, now 29, was a Tranmere player when he played 24 games for the Reds in 2012/13 and scored one goal. His loan was twice extended and he finally signed a permanent deal with the Cumbrians.
However due to a clause in his contract he was able to leave for a professional club if one showed any interest.
He has since gone on to top 100 appearances for Falkirk, Rotherham and Cardiff before joining Wednesday last season. He has also gone on to play seven times for Wales.
Wednesday will play either Barnsley or Bolton who meet in their second leg at Oakwell tonight, all square at 1-1.
