Fresh calls have been made by the public for disposable barbecues to be banned after a large fire above Ullswater on Saturday night.

Crews from Penrith, Patterdale, Keswick and Appleby were turned out to tackle the blaze with some still at the scene until 7am on Sunday.

he fire occurred in the Knotts Hill area, Watermillock, and required four appliances, two wildfire units, and a water bowser at the scene.

Barbecues and open fires are not permitted anywhere in the Lake District.

The Lake District National Park Authority advises against barbecues and open fires on the grounds they are a fire hazard and environmentally damaging, cause risk to wildlife, and often result in litter being left behind.

It said: “Major landowners agreed to ban visitors from having barbecues or fires on their land to help look after our national park. Please respect this special place and leave no trace.”
