A man has been arrested following a major house blaze in Maryport.
Firefighters were called to the Old Vicarage in Church Terrace yesterday, June 13, to tackle the blaze.
Police were called at around 11.30pm and a man, 49, was arrested on suspicion of arson.
The arrested man had sustained smoke inhalation and minor injuries during the fire incident and was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven for checks. He is now in police custody.
The fire service has launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze.
It is understood that people had to be evacuated from the Old Vicarage as a fire took hold – there were fears that their pets had died in the blaze, but it appears they ran off and three of the four dogs are accounted for.

Emergency services also attended the allotments on Mote Hill, off Furnace Road, to tackle a blaze.
The incidents are not connected, the fire service said.
The blaze in the allotments began as a small blaze, which spread to two allotments and sheds.
